Career change at 40 or 50 in Switzerland in the AI era: the guide
Yes, you can change occupation at 40 or 50 in Switzerland, and several public schemes exist for it: free advice from age 40 with viamia, measures from the regional employment centre if you are unemployed, the vocational diploma for adults, validation of prior learning, a federal subsidy for federal examinations. AI adds one question to ask before choosing: are the tasks of the target occupation themselves exposed?
Career change at 40 or at 50: where do you start?
The official Swiss portal orientation.ch warns of three challenges: a possible drop in income for some time, friends and family who may worry, and a project that can take several years. It recommends clarifying your expectations, taking a realistic inventory, assessing your skills, finding out about training, talking about it and asking for help. Here is that advice put in order, with the AI step added.
- Say why you want to change. Desire, health, or an occupation that is no longer in demand: the reason shapes what follows and the support available.
- Take stock of what you can do. Your real tasks, your professional skills, your human skills. That is what an assessment is for.
- Test the target occupation against AI. List its tasks and classify them with the method on our page will AI replace my job. There is no point training for three years for tasks that are being automated.
- Measure the gap. Is what you are missing a qualification, experience or tools?
- Choose the training route. See the table further down.
- Build the budget. Course fees, materials, examinations, and above all the drop in income during training.
- Ask for help. The career guidance office of your canton, the regional employment centre if you are registered, your employer if the project concerns them. In French-speaking Switzerland, the addresses canton by canton are in skills assessment in French-speaking Switzerland.

Validation of prior learning, often forgotten
If you already have the trade in your hands but not the paper, validation of prior learning lets you obtain a Federal VET Diploma (CFC/EFZ) or Certificate (AFP/EBA) without redoing an apprenticeship. You need at least five years of professional experience, including two to four years in the target occupation. The procedure has five phases: information and advice, self-assessment and portfolio, evaluation, validation, certification. The contact point is the entry portal of your canton, listed on orientation.ch.
Long training or short certification for a career change?
The question is not the length, it is what the market will ask of you at the end.
| Your situation | The most logical route | AI point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| The target occupation requires a qualification | Vocational diploma for adults, federal professional or advanced professional examination | Check the tasks of the occupation before committing for several years |
| You have the experience, not the qualification | Validation of prior learning or direct final examination | Use the portfolio to highlight how you use AI |
| You stay in your field, the role changes | Short, practical training on the tools | Choose a course that starts from your tasks, not from a catalogue |
| You do not yet know where to go | An assessment first, training afterwards | Compare several paths on their real tasks |
Career change and AI: which job to aim for without being a developer?
The World Economic Forum estimates that 39% of workers’ current skills will be transformed or become outdated by 2030. In Switzerland, PwC observes that demand is driven mostly by people who use AI in their trade: about 8,400 more user profiles in 2025, against 220 for developers. The most accessible career change is therefore often a shift: keep your sector and your know-how, and add command of the tools. Our guide the AI skills employers want details which ones.
The Ryze Shift assessment compares your skills with job families that are on the rise with AI: AI-augmented operations, augmented customer relations, no-code automation, AI lead within a company, digital project management, or your own business. These are examples: your real paths come out of your assessment. The assessment is free, the debrief by a Shift advisor is included, and you leave with a 30-day plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change career at 50 in Switzerland?
Yes. The Swiss qualification routes for adults exist precisely for that: the Federal VET Diploma for adults, validation of prior learning, the federal professional examination. Several schemes even target the over-40s or over-50s: viamia from age 40, and longer induction allowances for unemployed people over 50.
Is a career change funded by the regional employment centre?
Swiss unemployment insurance can fund further training and retraining courses, placements or training allowances. It is the regional employment centre (RAV/ORP) that decides whether the measure is appropriate in your case. You have to be registered and talk to your adviser before you commit.
Should you choose a long training course or a short certification?
It depends on what you are missing. If the target occupation requires a qualification (vocational diploma, federal examination), the long route is unavoidable. If you already have the trade and lack the tools, a short course is often enough. In both cases, check that the tasks of the target occupation are not themselves highly exposed to AI.
Can you obtain a Swiss vocational diploma without redoing an apprenticeship?
Yes, through validation of prior learning. According to orientation.ch, you need at least five years of professional experience, including two to four years in the target occupation. The procedure has five phases and a portfolio of evidence.
Which future-proof job with AI, without being a developer?

So the paths are often found in your current trade, with AI in support. The Ryze Shift assessment suggests paths scored against your real skills.
