viamia or Ryze Shift: which assessment fits your situation?
viamia is a Swiss public service. If you are 40 or over, live in Switzerland and are not entitled to a similar offer from unemployment insurance, disability insurance or social assistance, start with viamia: it is free and run by a career counsellor from your canton. If you are under 40, registered with a regional employment centre, or if your question is mainly about AI in your job, the Ryze Shift assessment is a free and immediate option. The two complement each other.
viamia in Switzerland from age 40: how does it work?
viamia is a professional assessment and advice service offered by the career guidance services of the Swiss cantons. It takes place in five steps:
- You contact the viamia guidance service of your canton of residence.
- You take stock of your professional situation with a counsellor.
- You identify the development options that exist on the labour market.
- Depending on the results, further appointments can be set to refine your goals.
- Together you set concrete steps.
The French-speaking cantons add a few details on their pages:
- Vaud: be over 40 (or turn 40 in the current year), live in the canton, and not receive benefits from unemployment insurance, disability insurance or the cantonal social assistance scheme (revenu d’insertion). You fill in a questionnaire and send an up-to-date CV before the first interview. Canton page (in French).
- Geneva: registration goes through a short guidance interview at the Cité des métiers du Grand Genève. You must live in the canton or pay tax there. Cité des métiers page (in French).
- Fribourg: the offer is managed by the cantonal service for career guidance and adult education. Its 2021 page mentions a B1 language level. State of Fribourg page (in French).
viamia is not offered everywhere: viamia.ch states, for example, that the canton of Aargau does not offer it. For a self-assessment, viamia points to the portal carriere.orientation.ch and its online questionnaires.

Which assessment should you choose?
- You are 40 or over, employed or self-employed, and live in Switzerland. Register for viamia with your canton. While you wait for the appointment, you can take the Ryze Shift assessment and bring the report to your counsellor.
- You are under 40. viamia is not open to you. Your options: the career guidance office of your canton, the questionnaires on carriere.orientation.ch, and the Ryze Shift assessment.
- You are registered with a regional employment centre. Talk to your adviser there first: it is unemployment insurance that can propose a measure. The Ryze Shift assessment remains accessible free of charge as a complement.
- Your question is: what will AI do to my job? That is the strong point of Ryze Shift, which sorts your week into what AI will do, what it strengthens and what stays yours. You can also do this sorting yourself with our method in 15 minutes.
- You live outside Switzerland. viamia is a Swiss cantonal service. The Ryze Shift assessment is done online, wherever you are.
What Ryze Shift does not do
To be honest: Ryze Shift is not a public service and gives access to no state benefit. Its result is guidance, never an employment decision. If you need support linked to unemployment, a health condition or social assistance in Switzerland, the right contacts are the regional employment centre, the disability insurance office or the social service, as orientation.ch points out.
For the addresses of the offices in French-speaking cantons, see career assessment in French-speaking Switzerland. For prices and possible funding, see cost and funding. And to discover the assessment itself, the Ryze Shift page.
Frequently asked questions
Who is entitled to viamia?
According to viamia.ch, the offer is for people over 40 living in Switzerland who are not otherwise entitled to similar services from unemployment insurance, disability insurance or social assistance. You register with the career guidance service of your canton of residence. If in doubt, it is that service that decides.
Is viamia really free?
Yes. viamia.ch describes a free individual consultation, and the pages of the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and Fribourg confirm it.
I am registered with a regional employment centre (RAV/ORP): can I do viamia?
As a general rule no, if you are entitled to a similar offer through Swiss unemployment insurance. The canton of Vaud specifies that viamia is for people who do not receive benefits from unemployment insurance, disability insurance or the cantonal social assistance scheme. Ask your employment centre adviser: they are the one who can propose a measure.
I am under 40: what are my options?
The career guidance office of your canton also sees adults under 40. The portal carriere.orientation.ch offers online questionnaires (in French; the German version is at laufbahn.berufsberatung.ch). And the Ryze Shift assessment is accessible with no stated age condition, free of charge, on your phone.
Does Ryze Shift replace viamia?
No. viamia is a public service run by career counsellors. Ryze Shift is a private tool focused on the tasks of your job and how well you use AI. The two complement each other, and if you are entitled to viamia, we advise you to use it.
